Tendu - A new basic theme for Bi-Directional Drupal websites

Welcome to the Tendu theme homepage.

This theme is a clean, written from scratch, cross-browser and RTL ready theme.
Based on some principles taken from the known ZEN theme.

Some Q&A:

Why "Tendu"?
The name "BiDi" is already taken by another theme.
I googled a bit for all kinds of names, and eventually came across the name "Tendu", which is the tree from which "bidi" cigarettes are made.
It sounded clever at the time...
Why create another basic theme?
There aren't many themes that have been translated to support right-to-left languages (Hebrew, Arabic, etc.) and a small number of these works "out of the box" on all browsers (especially our beloved friend Explorer 6).

A big portion of my work as a Client-side developer is to convert designs to RTL and fix these bugs.

In my ongoing work I learned and developed some techniques and I found myself copy/pasting the same code snippets all the time. So I started to use the same code base for all of them, and Tendu is the result of this work.

So, what exactly is Tendu?

Tendu, by definition, is intended to be a wireframe for future RTL ready themes, by itself it is pretty basic and has almost no extra markup to support complex designs.

Some of the more important features:

  • Support for the i18n package "out of the box".
  • Supports fluid and fixed width designs, with a premeditated decision to support only fixed or 100% width in IE6
  • 100% Cross-browser design - for LTR and RTL layouts.
  • Simple, clean and readable Markup and CSS, so developers will have an easy job in adopting it.
Can I start using Tendu right away?
Yes. I uploaded the project to Drupal.org
Note that Tendu is still in development, though, as you can see here it is fully functional.
